Tamarindo Surf Guide 2025 | 3 Best Spots With Easy Access

An Introduction To Tamarindo Surf

Tamarindo is a laid-back surf town on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, where good waves, a chilled-out vibe, and a strong surf culture all come together. It’s compact and walkable, with most surf spots easily reached by foot or bike, making it perfect for surfers who want to stay close to the lineup

Tamarindo Beach is the town’s main break, offering consistent waves suited for beginners and intermediates. Its forgiving conditions and year round swell make it a popular spot to learn, practice, and progress.

Just across the estuary lies Playa Grande, a powerful wave favored by more advanced surfers seeking steeper drops and longer rides. A short ride south is Playa Langosta, a more challenging reef break that delivers punchy and challenging waves with fewer crowds.

Everything is within easy reach, which makes Tamarindo surf perfect for wave riders who prefer to keep things simple, connected, and walkable.

From June through October, Tamarindo surf enters its low season, bringing in smaller, friendlier swells. These months are ideal for new surfers & those looking to refine their style in mellow conditions. How To Get To Tamarindo Surf

Distance: 260km (162mi)

To reach Tamarindo surf, the most convenient route is to fly into Liberia Airport (LIR) & then take a local bus to your destination. Below is a quick guide with various transportation options to help you choose the best way to get to Tamarindo based on your preferences.

Taxi or Rideshare
Approx. 4-5 hrs.

Details:
While a direct taxi or ride-share from Juan Santamaría International Airport to Tamarindo surf is the fastest option, it can be very difficult to find one willing to make the long journey. The journey follows Route 1 (Interamericana Highway) to Liberia, then takes Route 21 & Route 152 to Tamarindo.

Official airport taxis are available at arrivals, but ride-share options like Uber can be limited for long-distance trips.

HolidayTaxis or Welcome Pickups offer the chance to book your taxi ahead of time, so you can bypass queues at the airport. This is great for travelers with surfboards or bulky luggage wanting a hassle-free, quick transfer to their destination.

Public Transport
Approx. 6-7.5 hrs.

Details:
There are no direct public buses from the airport to Tamarindo surf. First, take a taxi or ride-share ($5–$15 USD) to the 7-10 Bus Terminal in downtown San José. From there, Empresa Alfaro operates daily buses to Tamarindo.

The journey takes 5.5–6.5 hours, depending on traffic, with some buses stopping in Liberia before continuing to Tamarindo. While this is the most affordable option, it’s a long ride, & buses can fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended.

Shuttle Service
Approx. 4.5-6 hrs.

Details:
Several companies, including Interbus, Tamarindo Shuttle, & Caribe Shuttle, offer shared & private transfers from Juan Santamaría International Airport to Tamarindo. Shared shuttles run on set schedules & may have stops in Liberia or along the Nicoya Peninsula, slightly extending travel time.

Due to limited availability, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season.

Pre-book your shuttle with HolidayTaxis or Welcome Pickups and get a waiting vehicle as soon as you land. This ensures a stress-free, efficient transfer from the airport to the beach, helping you relax sooner.
