Mundaka surf is a must for surfers heading to northern Spain. This tiny fishing village is famous for its legendary left-hand river mouth, drawing surfers from all over for some of Europe’s best barrels.
The waves suit mostly intermediate and advanced surfers, peeling over a scenic backdrop inside the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Surrounded by green hills and calm scenery, the surf here feels epic but natural.
Beginners are not left out. Laida Beach has soft, forgiving waves that are perfect for learning without fear. A bit farther along, Laga Beach gives intermediates a chance at slightly bigger and more challenging surf.
After sessions, the town’s walkable streets, traditional architecture, and cozy pintxos bars make it easy to relax and soak up Basque culture. Just a bus or train ride from Bilbao, Mundaka surf gives world-class waves and authentic local charm in one package.

Summer is the least reliable time for Mundaka surf, as smaller & less powerful swells struggle to break properly over the famous sandbank. While longboarders may still find the estuary enjoyable, most shortboarders will need to look elsewhere for more powerful waves.
