San Juan del Sur Surf Guide Overview

San Juan del Sur surf guide starts with one simple fact. The best waves are not right in town. Playa San Juan del Sur sits beside the centre, but the better breaks are found along the coast to the north. Playa Marsella and Playa Maderas are the two key options and two of the best in Nicaragua.

Then there is the warm water. The offshore winds. The laid-back beach-town feel. You have several surf spots within roughly 5 km of San Juan del Sur.

Playa Maderas is the main attraction, with more consistent waves and plenty of variety. Marsella is smaller and more forgiving.

You can surf here year-round. The dry season usually brings cleaner, more manageable conditions. The wetter months can bring bigger south and southwest swells. Either way, you have plenty of water time.

Best Time To Surf San Juan del Sur

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

San Juan del Sur surf conditions become more powerful from May through August. This is the time to go if you want bigger, more consistent southern swells.

The waves can get seriously fun. And seriously powerful. South and southwest swells regularly push into the exposed beaches, creating bigger surf for experienced surfers.

Mornings can be clear and glassy before tropical rain arrives later in the day. Warm water is a constant bonus.

March and April mark the beginning of the bigger swell season. September and October can also produce plenty of southern swell.

You can get some excellent waves during these months. Conditions are less predictable, though. Some days are smaller and playful. Others can turn powerful quickly.

March and April are great if you want building swell with less rain. September and October offer plenty of swell potential, but they also bring some of the wettest weather of the year.

Your best approach is to stay flexible. Watch the swell. Watch the wind. Then choose your beach accordingly.

November through February is a great period if you’re learning to surf or prefer easier waves.

Expect plenty of warm water, sunny days and steady offshore winds. Wave heights are often around 2 to 4 foot, creating more forgiving conditions at the area’s beach breaks.

The crowds can be more noticeable around popular beaches, but the trade-off is simpler surf and more predictable weather.

San Juan del Sur Surf Spot Guide

Ideal Conditions:

  • Tide: Mid to high tide
  • Wind: East to northeast
  • Swell Direction: South & southwest
  • Crowd Factor: Low

The beach directly in town is convenient, but it is not the main reason surfers visit San Juan del Sur. The bay is more sheltered than the exposed beaches north of town.

It can produce small waves suitable for beginners when conditions line up. It’s also easy to check the conditions and paddle out without arranging transport.

Rating: 2.5/5

Ideal Conditions:

  • Tide: Mid to high tide
  • Wind: East to northeast
  • Swell Direction: South to southwest
  • Crowd Factor: Moderate

Marsella is a sheltered beach break with softer waves than Maderas.

Higher tides can make the wave more forgiving, which suits newer surfers. It can also provide an alternative when other nearby breaks are too powerful.

The beach is quieter than Maderas, giving you a more relaxed session when the waves are working. It’s great for surfers who want something between the small town beach and the stronger waves at Maderas.

Rating: 3.5/5

Ideal Conditions:

  • Tide: All tides, with mid to high often friendlier for learners
  • Wind: Northeast to east
  • Swell Direction: South to southwest
  • Crowd Factor: Moderate to high

Maderas is the standout surf break near San Juan del Sur. It’s a consistent sandy beach break with left and right peaks. It can handle everything from smaller learner-friendly waves to powerful overhead surf.

The wave works throughout the year and responds particularly well to southwest swell and northeast to east winds.

When the swell increases, the wave becomes faster, steeper and more demanding.  On smaller days, it can offer fun peaks for improving surfers without the same intensity.

Rating: 4.5/5
